CambridgeTab rates Durex Play as 6 out of 5 (Couldn’t have been better than that) and an absolute must for any bedside drawer. Check this review; of course, you will have to wade through a whole lot of other lubricants before you reach Durex Play Feel Intimate Lube.

The days of January are slowly drawing to a close. This can only mean one thing in the minds of all you lovelorn guys and girls out there: Valentines Day is approaching! Now, if you are amongst the more organised, you’ve probably got your plans entirely concrete at this stage. The hotel room has been booked, the Champagne charged to the credit card, the bouquet of roses ordered. But what about the little things? Sure, all of the above are important in their own way, but when it comes down to the ‘meat’ of Valentines day, how on earth will you decide which products, lotions, potions and indeed toys to include in your bag of tricks? Never fear my darlings, I’m here to brave the worst and make sure your night is second to none this 14th of February.

First up and easily my most favourite: Lubrication.

Now, while many of you out there will claim never to need this aid, take it from someone who knows – a little squirt of this is paramount to ensuring that your bed is used for its proper purpose. It’s not just for the in-and-out you know, but very useful for the up-and-down movements, as well as that all important finger tip tango. Of course; if your budget is a little thin – you can always wander off to your nearest welfare officer, and they are supposedly good for a little packet or two. My personal experience with this stuff is that it’s fine, does the job – but if you are in the market for something a little more special then read on my darlings, read on.

Juicy Lube Luscious Watermelon

While doing my research for this article, I discovered that a lot of people don’t really understand flavoured lube. My answer is always ‘depends on what you use it for.’ This particular brand for instance is testament to that statement. As an actual lubrication, it’s not particularly good – it’s a bit thin and needs a lot of reapplication to stay the distance. As a flavour enhancer however, this can turn any piece of the anatomy into a watermelon flavoured lollypop – if you get my drift. It has that sweet, artificial taste of candy (Reminiscent of ‘Melody Pops’ if anyone remembers those) that doesn’t fade, even with repeated licks. That said, The Boy despised it; claiming it tasted like chemicals. Flavoured Lubes it appears might be affected by that old adage: ‘taste is in the mouth of the beholder.’

Rating: 3 out 5 for limited use applications.

KY Jelly

Purchased: Boots

Price: Unknown

This is the old favourite, and yet I wouldn’t advise purchasing it. According to sources it has apparently changed formula over the last few years and is currently a complete let down in terms of functionality. With so many other products on the market – and with easier and sexier application bottles then the tooth-paste tube I was testing – I suggest you leave the dinosaur behind and look elsewhere. Then again, if anyone has had a better experience, I encourage you to leave a comment – I’m always open to a change of mind!

Ann Summers Rub Tub

Purchased: Ann Summers

Price: £12

I will just point out right now that this product is not a lubricant, and therefore should not be used internally. However, it is a selection of three brightly coloured jelly-esque creams which are each designed to be smeared on individual parts of your anatomy – Nipples, girlie bits and the boy bits. Each claims to enhance foreplay, sensitivity and for the latter two – orgasms. For any of you browsing through Ann Summers this weekend I’ll just warn you right now that this claim is a complete and utter fabrication, and an annoying waste of 12 pounds.

First tested was the nipple rub. It claims to be citrus tasting and will cause ‘tingling’. Now, due to our busy Cambridge lifestyle I was forced to rub this on The Boy while he was toasting sandwiches so that the effect could be rated in time for this review. I note this just in case it biased the experiment, but I doubt the results would have been any better had he been bound and gagged naked on the bed. No tingling, just a bit cold, and it tasted so nasty I had to wash my mouth out afterwards. I had a similar experience of nothingness, even after leaving it on for nearly 15 minutes. This however, was actually the good one of the bunch. The one for the girlie bits claimed to cause heat, but since you can’t lick it, and can’t have it inside the body (due to it containing liberal amounts of paraffin no doubt), and the burning is actually rather uncomfortable, this was also a waste of time. Worst of all was the one for the boy bit – instead of enhancing anything it caused reported numbness and subsequent failure. I have never been so angry with a product and ended up throwing them across the room in disgust. Be careful Ann Summers, you’ve made a powerful enemy in me.

Result: 0 out of 5. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

Durex Play Feel Intimate Lube

I might be a little biased in my reviewing of this particular product because essentially, if there was one thing I had to bring on a dessert island it would be a pot of Durex lube (just in case I happened to be marooned on Johnny Depp’s private island just after he had given Vanessa Paradis the boot of course). This wonderful, magical, thick clear liquid has given me more pleasure then I can think of without getting too distracted to continue writing… It’s long lasting, hard wearing, doesn’t stain the sheets, and can be used inside and out. Anything your dirty little mind can contemplate will be aided by this small blue little bottle. Plus you get the added joy of seeing whether the crew in Boots even flicker as you buy such an obviously sexual item amongst the old ladies clutching corn cream and whining about their prescriptions. It also comes in ‘Tingle’ and ‘Cherry’, which this reviewer has unfortunately not has the pleasure to try by the time of writing this article, but is rather hopeful about her own 14th of February presents. You can also buy it in individual sachets for (I assume) carrying round in a wallet or purse, but I have simply bought two pots – one for his room and one for mine, just to cover all eventualities. After all, you never know when you may need some.

Result: 6 out of 5. An absolute must for any bedside drawer.

Understanding The Female Orgasm

When it comes to the female orgasm, most guys are confused. What Happens?

When a woman orgasms, regardless of which area of her body you’re manipulating, her body physically reacts in the same way. During an orgasm, she feels:

Stimulation in her clitoris
Her heart rate, blood pressure and breathing increase
Tension builds within her pelvis
Muscles contract throughout her body, especially in the vagina, uterus, rectum, and pelvic floor
Tension is released upon orgasm

Blue Clitoris

Believe it or not, it is possible for women to get what is often called “blue balls” in men. As you know by now, the clitoris and penis are remarkably similar after conception, but males go on to develop penises.

If a woman gets incredibly turned on, her clitoris, like the penis, becomes engorged with blood. If the blood isn’t released via orgasm, she will experience discomfort — just as men do.

Different Types

It was Sigmund Freud who first suggested that there were two types of female orgasm. However, sex researcher Alfred Kinsey refuted the claim and his view was that there is only one type of female orgasm.

Other sexperts claim that women can have three types of orgasm: clitoral, vaginal and blended. But considering the latter is literally the other two put together, I wouldn’t necessarily classify it as a type.

So who’s right when it comes to female orgasms?

However, clinical studies prove that Kinsey was right. Most sexologists now agree that an orgasm is an orgasm, no matter what area of a woman’s genitalia or body is being stimulated.

Nonetheless, here are the two areas of a woman’s vagina that can lead to the most satisfying female orgasm:

Clitoris
The clitoris’ only function is to provide pleasure for women. Researchers have not been able to discover any other reason for its existence, which is fine by us. As well, keep in mind that, because the clitoris is much easier to find, female orgasm is usually achieved via clitoral stimulation.

Vagina
Inside the vagina, you can find the infamous G-spot, or the Grafenberg spot. The G-spot is located on the front wall (toward the navel) of the vagina, between the opening and the cervix. Theory dictates that the G-spot can be either a bundle of nerves coming from the clitoris or a gland (or series of glands) that produces lubrication.

Usually, after one orgasm, guys need to rest (unless you’re one of those lucky guys who can achieve multiples), but it’s believed that women can experience three tempos of orgasm, which include the single orgasm, the serial multiple orgasm and the sequential multiple orgasm.

Single
With the single orgasm, a woman experiences one rush of pleasure. The orgasm can last anywhere from a few seconds to a minute.

Serial multiple
Although most women claim that they cannot achieve this awesome ride, a multiple orgasm occurs when several orgasms are had in a row — that is, one directly after another.

Sequential multiple
Sequential orgasms occur in a sequence that separates each orgasm by a few minutes or so. Many women describe it as a roller coaster ride.

How to give it to her
Many women claim that reaching orgasm is more difficult via penetration than it is via stimulation of the clitoris. As well, when it comes to vaginal stimulation of any area, most women agree that fingers are the preferred tool.

Keep in mind that any type of sexual stimulation can lead a woman to orgasm. And although there are some women who can will themselves to orgasm without even being touched, it is rare.

Massage, foreplay, direct stimulation, and even talking can make a woman reach orgasm. Most women, however, find that direct stimulation of the clitoris is the easiest way for them to climax. So use your tongue, your fingers, even rub your penis against it, and she might climax.

Things you didn’t know about her orgasm

We’re well into the 21st Century, we have the capability to engineer a Swiss army knife with all the functionalities of a hardware store and Richard Branson is about to launch space travel for the masses, but what exactly do we – we men, that is – really know about women? The average Joe on the street knows next to nothing about women as biological entities, far less about the way their minds work and has only a vague inkling about their sexuality.

When it comes to what we know about the female orgasm, most of us would be able to write our insights onto the back of a small postage stamp with a marker pen and have room to spare. Frankly, gents, it’s not a very satisfactory state of affairs.

Design or accident of evolution?

From a purely biological perspective, in order to stand a chance of propagating their genetic line, men have to have an orgasm during intercourse. Women don’t. This has lead a number of researchers, among them feminist philosopher of biology Elisabeth Lloyd and the legendary late Steven Jay Gould, to argue that the ability of women to have orgasms developed “accidentally”, without any good evolutionary reason. For them asking why women have orgasms is a bit like asking why men have nipples.

Other scientists suggest that there are, in fact, several functions to the female orgasm. Evolutionary psychologist David Barash, for instance, insists that a woman’s orgasm “is a signal whereby [her] body tells her brain that she is sexually engaged with a dominant individual.”

There is also some observational evidence for something charmingly referred to as “uterine upsuck”: the rhythmic motion in which a woman’s cervix dips into the pool of semen during orgasmic intercourse, thereby increasing the retention of high-quality sperm and the chances of pregnancy compared to sex without female orgasm.

Other interesting hergasm titbits:

While some women can’t have an orgasm at all, most women report that they are more likely to have one while masturbating than during sex with a man. No pressure, guys!
Sigmund Freud divided female orgasms into the vaginal and the clitoral kinds, but insisted that the clitoral variety was an adolescent phenomenon, while only the vaginal orgasm without clitoral stimulation was appropriate for mature women. Surprisingly small-minded for the father of psychology.
In the 60s, researchers William Masters and Virginia E. Johnson repudiated Freud, arguing that clitoral stimulation is in fact the primary source of the female orgasm, both clitoral and vaginal.
According to sex researcher Shere Hite, only about 30 percent of women achieve orgasms during vaginal sex.
Health24′s Great South African Sex Survey of 2009 revealed that a whopping 41 percent of South African women sometimes fake orgasms and a less than trivial 6 percent do so often or always.
Studies have shown that religious women tend to have less frequent orgasms than non-religious ones.
A woman is more likely to experience an orgasm during the most fertile period of her menstrual cycle.
A study among Chinese women revealed that they had more frequent orgasms when they were with wealthy male partners than with men who earn less. Gulp!
Some women claim that they can reach an orgasm from stimulation of the breasts, nipples and G spot, from foreplay, a sensual message, sitting on a bicycle seat, exercising, sneezing, yawning or even just from talking.
Unlike the vast majority of men, many women are capable of achieving multiple orgasms.
According to research published in 2005, “up to 45 percent of the differences between women in their ability to reach orgasm can be explained by their genes.”
Dr. Stuart Meloy, an anaesthesiologist from North Carolina is busy developing a remote-controlled implant that stimulates the spinal chord just in the right places to help women reach an orgasm. The contraption is called the Orgasmatron after a fictional device in the 1973 Woody Allen film “Sleeper”.
A brain scanning study showed that many areas of a woman’s brain shut down during orgasm. Less brain deactivation was observed in men, but that may have to do with the fact that men’s orgasms are way too short to allow the instrument to measure any changes in brain activity.
For most men, sex ends when they’ve had their orgasm. For most women sex isn’t over even if and when they’ve had theirs…

The One With My First Review

Now don’t I just feel like a proper grown up blogger now? This is my first ever review, and so if I leave something out or ramble on about something too much, please let me know, ok? The lovely people over at Durex sent me a bottle of their ‘Play-O’ orgasm gel, which is celebrating its first birthday at the moment to review for y’all and I have to say I was pretty impressed. The packaging is rather luxurious, as far as a cardboard box can go, and the bottle is made of glass rather than plastic (or at least, that’s what it looks like!) It also comes seperately from the pump in transit to avoid any spillages and to stop it drying out, which I thought was pretty clever! It looks pretty classy and I accidentally left it on my desk whilst people were coming in and out of the room, and no one really noticed or commented, which was good!

It’s supposed to ‘increase sexual desire as well as heightening sensitivity to the clitoris through a heady mix of invigorating ingredients resulting in the most intense, leg-quivering orgasms you’ve ever experienced’.

Now, I’m not sure about the most intense, but it definitely wasn’t bad! When applied it takes a few seconds to get going, and then feels really tingly (a lot like any tingly lube you might have tried!) and definitely focuses your attention in the right places! The intensity of the sensation wears off after a while, but there’s still a lovely warming/cooling feeling left – which is odd, but in a good way! Again, if you’ve tried any tingling lubricants before then you’ll know what I’m talking about. I maybe applied it three or four times in one session to keep the tingling feeling strong, and although that’s a bit of a pain it could also be construed as a good thing – it’s easier to put more on to make it stronger than to take it off to make it weaker if you’re not enjoying it. I also think the more intense your ministrations, the quicker the sensation rubs off.

Ruth Gresty, brand manager of Durex Play, commented, “According to our Global Sexual Wellbeing Survey, Play O heightened sensitivity in women by 68% and wait for it…79% of women achieved an orgasm when using it!”

I am one of the 79% of women, but that may be down to my skillful handiwork than the Play-O, it’s difficult to tell! I think with this product it’s a mixture of the lovely sensation (although it dulls over time it’s still quite pleasant!) and the psychological aspect – the tingling means you cannot let your mind drift onto sometime else and therefore it’s easier to orgasm! Woo!

It’s not a lube, but it feels very similar to a lot of lubes that I’ve used and even with a small amount it makes things nice and slippery, which obviously contributes to an easier and better orgasm. And another thing, which I really liked, it doesn’t go tacky and horrible after you’ve been playing for a while, which I’ve found to be a problem with Durex lubes. It’s also condom compatible and doesn’t stain.

Overall I really liked this product, and would definitely recommend it for a novel sensation and some fun times. I can’t vouch for it helping women to orgasm who find it difficult, but it’s always worth a go and it’ll be fun no matter the end result. It can be used alone or with a partner, or a vibrator for that matter, and if you want something a bit different then go for it.

It can have four kisses out of five, because I would have liked the sensation to have been stronger and lasted longer, although that’s my personal preference. So on occasion, I get sent some pretty random things to review for BeautyMecca that have, at best, a tenuous link to the world of beautification (Fun Betty the hair colour for ladies’ mimsy fur, I am talking about you) but I think we have a winner.

Apparently, 79% of British women achieved orgasm by using the Durex Play O product but tragically, all it did for me was remind me that I am not getting any… But my own personal hell aside, we all know that good sex leads to a good complexion (fact) and the need for less blusher. Which would actually be great because right now because I’m almost all out of my Bobbi Brown Blue Raspberry limited edition from last year. Anyone want to volunteer? 79% are odds I like.

From a BeautyMecca perspective, the Durex Play O bottle is quite cute and so wouldn’t scare people if you forgot to hide it in your secret drawer.
